When I was a young man I began learning the roofing trade. I knew absolutely nothing about roofing in Salt Lake or anywhere else for that matter. A couple of roofing contractors took me under their wings, so to speak and taught me the tricks of the roofing trade.

First thing they taught me was to use GAF roofing products. GAF roofing materials are the best in the industry. Roofing contractors come to rely on GAF because the products are dependable. Roofing products need to last and they need to bear the wear and tear of industrial use. GAF roofing materials are durable, plain and simple.

Composition shingles are the most noticeable, in this writer’s opinion. Inferior composition shingles become very brittle and break in cold weather. During the summer months when the weather is hot composition shingles tend to tear and smudge easier with an inferior roofing product. I remember walking on a roof that was laid with inferior roofing materials during a very hot day. You could see my footprints in the shingles. That wouldn’t happen with a high quality product like GAF.

Back to my first roofing job. The roofing contractors that taught me took the time to teach me well. They showed me how to use a roofing hammer which I had never seen prior to that day. This particular hammer was used for laying composition roofing materials. A small tomahawk is what it looked like. On the head of the hammer were two additional tools. One was a knob that you could loosen and slide back and forth. I soon discovered that this tool was used for measuring the distance the placement distance of each layer of shingle compared to the layer beneath it. Shingles overlap. The other tool was a replaceable blade which was razor sharp. The blade was used for cutting and shaping shingles along the ridges, valleys and vents. If you were not careful, you could easily slice your arm, which I did many times and a newcomer to the industry.

Pitched roofing is where composition shingles are used most commonly. They cannot be used on flat roofs. Sitting on a pitched roof and applying shingles is another talent that must be learned. The best way to describe it is that you’re sitting on your hip with your legs extended. Roofing products are made to pad your hip while working because composition shingles get hot they can burn through whatever clothing you have on. I have burned my hips many a times. Some roofers sit above the shingles they’re laying while reaching down to nail the shingle down.

Back in my day, the roofing product used for carrying nails was a simple pouch tied around your waist. As you were nailing, you would just reach inside your pouch and pull out a few nails. I had a habit of putting a few between my lips for easy access. Nowadays, roofing contractors are using air compression to power their hammers. It makes hammering that much easier almost to the point that it takes all the fun and accomplishment out of the job.

Using GAF roofing products and materials make the roofing job that much better. I would never use any other line of products or materials. If you want to be the best, use the best.

An industrial bin full of shingles being removed from a house. Looks like there were at least three layers: the cedar shakes, the brown asphalt, and the old school blue. I really love that blue.

This was taken before I knew I had shingles, but after I knew something was wrong, because I had a massive headache. Those slight red spots above my eyebrows that look like pimples are actually the rash associated with shingles. I wish now that I hadn’t tried to pop them.

Shingles Symptoms Symptoms Of Shingles

Shingles Symptoms: Symptoms of Shingles

Shingles, which is also, referred as to harpers zoster is a disease that results from the reactivation of previous infections of herpes zoster virus or chickenpox virus. The disease is not, or related to the herpes virus which is sexually transmitted. Once you have suffered from chickenpox, the virus remains dormant in the nerves system as it never gets cleared completely. When you are under emotional stress, cancer, AIDS or have undergone chemotherapy and your immunity is deficient, the virus does reactivate itself and you develop shingles. There are a number of shingles symptoms which you should be on watch over to ensure that you are not developing this disease.

The first and most common symptom of this disease is developing pain or sensitivity that is extreme in the broad band on a single side of the body. This is the place where individual nerves emanating from the spinal cord function. The sensation is many a times itchy, aching constantly, burning, shooting, tingling or shooting. For some extreme cases, the pain is so much that a light breeze could cause discomfort. In addition to that, some patients get so disabled until they cannot carry out their daily businesses as usual. Similar symptoms also develop in the face and particularly around your eyes. You need to see a doctor with urgency. This is because shingles can cause temporary or even permanent blindness.

Once the pain begins, three days later, you will have the raised rashes and they come in the area where you felt the pain. These painful skin rashes normally come out in single localized place. The rashes are fluid filled and look sac like and they tend to be red. The rushes often disappear but the pain as a result of the shingles infection will persist for some people. At times, this pus filled blisters normally scabs in their 10 to about 12 days. Some patients however experience the pain without the blisters forming. The moment the rash finally disappears, normally within duration of two weeks there will be a scarring that will occur.

For the patients whose pain persists after the rash has disappeared, it is due to the fact that they have developed postherpetic neuralgia. About 15% of the people who suffer from shingles have these pain persisting. Your skin will return to normal in a period of 4 to six week and it is not easy to know that you suffered from shingles. When you have shingles, you will have lymph nodes that are tender or swollen; you may have stomach upsets and even feel very ill. This however may not be the obvious shingles symptoms to look for.

There are other symptoms of shingles that are not specific to this condition but they may be an indicator if you have other the above mentioned symptoms. You will have fever, chills, itching as well as a headache. If you have the above mentioned symptoms together with these non specific ones, there are higher chances you have shingles and you need to seek medical attention. Pregnant women are likely to infect their children with smallpox which may have other profound effects.

How To Install Asphalt Shingles

How to Install Asphalt Shingles 101

The first task to any roofing project is to figure out how much material you need. The easiest way to do this is to measure your roof with a tape measure as you read it. Make a diagram of the house roof and write down the measurements. Take the measurements to your local building center and have them estimate the materials for you. This will save you a lot of time. At this point, they will ask you when you want the material delivered. Give yourself 4-5 days if you are doing a tear-off (removing the old shingles) and 2-3 days if you are going over the existing to get the roof preped.

Next, we prep the roof. If you are tearing off, nail or staple tarps to the edge of the roof to create a slide for the shingles to go down. Use tarps or plastic at the bottom to keep the shingles off the yard. When you are done ripping shingles off, simply fold up the plastic with the shingles in them and through them away or throw them in the dumpster.

If you are going over an existing layer, it is time to start to install the ice and water shield and the roofing felt. The ice and water shield goes in the valleys and along the eaves to prevent leakage if ice damming occurs. The bottom has a peal and stick surface that is very sticky. The easiest way to install the ice and water shield is to roll out about 6′ of it and tack the upper corner (corner at the edge of the roof). Put only 2 or 3 staples in the top of the 6′ section. Repeat this until you have reaching the other edge of the roof and cut the ice and water shield at the end. Peal the bottom piece off the ice and water making sure to allow the material to adhere to the roof deck. Staple the bottom every 6″ in a “V” pattern as you go from one end to the other. Then pull the top that is tacked lightly into place back and peal the plastic layer off stapling in a “V” pattern all the way to the other end. If there is a valley, go up the valley at least 12″. Repeat this for the rest of the eaves.

Use galvanized or aluminum flashing in the valleys. The flashing should be at least 12″ on each side of the center of the valley. Nail down with roofing nails.

Now it is time to install the roofing felt. Roll out about 6′ and tack the top corner closest to the edge. Use the line on the ice and water shield you installed earlier as a guild. This will also ensure proper overlap. Once aligned tack the felt in place, rolling out 6′ sections at a time to keep it straight and minimize bubbles in the material. Always staple in a “V” pattern to prevent bubbles and maintain straightness. Overlap to the next piece to the line 2-3″ on the previous piece. Repeat until the entire roof is felted.

Now that the roof is felted, you can have the delivery truck with the shingles set the shingles on the roof for you an save you a lot of back work form carrying them up the ladder.

Notice how the shingles stager backwards. This is why we cut the courses ahead of time.

Now that you have the roof water resistant, it is time to cut some starter shingles. Start by cutting 6″ off one shingle. What is left over is the 2nd shingle of the course. Cut 12″ off the next shingle. What is left of that one if the 3rd course. Then cut 18″… you can see the pattern. Make piles in way of courses. This will speed installation up. Repeat this process about 5 or 6 times to couple a good runs going that you can work on without cutting for a while.

Now it is time to cut starter strips. Simply take a shingle, flip it on it’s top and cut along the line on the back of the shingle. It should be different thickness. Keep all of the top portions. This is what will start the roof.

Using a ladder line up the starter shingles on the edge of the metal gutter apron (this article assumes all metal edges were kept) and nail the starter into place. Nail above the adhesive strip to prevent possible leaking. Repeat this step along all the eaves of the house.

Once the starter strips are on, it is time to use the cut pieces from step 3. Start with a full shingle, line up the bottom and nail it down (Please see the diagram below for proper nailing procedure). Install the next shingle that is 6″ shorter than the previous on the next course forming a stair step effect. Repeat until you need to add full shingles. Repeat this process all the way to the top of the roof on all sides.

When shingling a valley, it is important to make sure that the shingles are not nailed in the valley. Simply overlap shingles from one section of roof over another as seen in the diagram below. Use roofing mastic or roofing cement to adhere the portion of the shingles in the valley. Use a chalk line to snap a line down the valley on the overlapped shingles, then cut along that line to make the roof valley uniform. Using a hoof blade in your utility knife will prevent cutting shingles you do not wish to cut.
